Small Portable AM/FM Shortwave Radio Review

Small Portable AM/FM Shortwave RadioPaid $39.98 at J & R Music World.Best in class. While this radio is not for the serious SW listener, it is just right for the international traveler who is concerned with space and reception. And, at this price point if it is lost or stolen you're only out $40.Sound on AM bands better than average...on FM also OK...does receive stereo with headphones...SW reception better than average, that is expected with a C Crane product...service also good, that too is expected with C Crane...size of the radio a bit large but OK...drawbacks....dial light a bit dim...and when you turn radio on with am band engaged you get a strange beep..but that's tolerable..overall, don't waste hundreds of dollars on a sony or grundig....most likely this C Crane radio will fill your needs at a very reasonable price point....I give it six stars

Product Description:
Finally, there is a compact radio that delivers high quality reception, the CCRadio AM/FM/Shortwave Pocket Radio. AM reception is considered best in class for any radio this size and both FM and Shortwave reception are exceptional as well. Moving from band to band and searching for stations has been made easy with the combined use of a "Favorites" button and turning the tuning knob. A large lighted LCD screen displays all radio information as well as clock, alarm, snooze and sleep timer functions. Scroll through stations using the tuning knob or use a direct-key entry. There are 200 memory settings that are retained even when batteries go dead or you reset the radio. The package includes a convenient carrying case and ear bud headphones (if you don't want to play it outloud over the speaker), which allows you to enjoy music while on the road, camping, boating....or anywhere you go. This product requires the use of two AA batteries, sold separately, which will power the radio for up to 70 continuous hours.SW BandDifferent SW Bands work better at different times of the day, year and even solar cycle. The short-wave receiver-quality reception of AM radio stations is strong enough up to pick up reception up to 500 miles away.

Crosley Corsair Clock Radio with CD Player Review

Crosley Corsair Clock Radio with CD PlayerI loved the picture of this item...I had just the place to put it in my home where it would look great. It does look great. It just hardly works. The whole thing only weighs a pound or two...this should have clued me in right away when unpacking it.The switches have an imprecise and awful feel and seemvery delicate. The sound quality is very poor (Remember those less than $5 transistor radios?) and the reception is worse.Even the strongest stations in my area only come in with a great deal of fuzzy sound and you can always hear the radio stations near them in the back ground.I haven't bought anything electronic that was this bad in years.Don't be fooled by the good looks...in this case beauty really is only skin deep.

C Crane CCRadio-SW (Model CSW-TCF) Review

C Crane CCRadio-SWI've been a fan of the original CC Radio Plus for a few years... but now the latest addition to the family is rising up the ranks.

The CC Radio SW, adding shortwave but removing the TV & Weather band, is as good (or better) than its CC-cousin. With many of the same features, incl., lighted dial, alarm & snooze functions, as well as terrific AM reception...and excellent sound, it outperforms most portables of similar size.It has many of the same extras as the Grundig S250, incl., an AM RF Gain knob. Also, separate switches for local & distant AM reception, in addition to operating on 2 types of batteries!! Either 4 AA's or 4 'D size. When plugged-in to the AC adapter, it has the ability to charge the batteries. This of course is only useful if you're using rechargeable cells in the unit. I haven't had this long enough to give a comment on battery usage, although if the key-pad lights are used too often, that will help to drain them quicker. The tuning ability is excellent. The large knob is easy to control and the ability to switch between slow & fast tuning (plus locking it on a frequency) is a nice addition. Another plus; it's very lightweight, and the built in (pop up)handle makes for easy transport.

The only gripes I have is that the small function buttons are a bit difficult to decipher at first due to the tiny print, and I wish there was a way to "lock out" the backlight display when tuning stations, on battery-power... like there is on the original CC.

If you like the CC Radio... you'll like this. Or, if you already have a Grundig, or similar brand, you may want to try the CC Radio SW!

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, Silver Review

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, SilverWith iPod auxiliary, premium speaker, and above average AM/FM reception, the Songbook is an attractive radio. I've had mine for 3 years. It locks on stations well. The speaker is not overwhelming in volume or bass but produces a warm sound. The speaker is not as rich as Tivoli's brother, the Model One, but the Songbook, perhaps because of its telescopic antenna, gets far better FM reception. One of the advantages of the silver color is that it is aluminum, not rubber like the other colors and the rubber radios hold dirt, which is not easy to clean.

If the Songbook is too pricey for you, you can get similar speaker sound and superior AM/FM reception from the similarly sized Sangean PR-D7 (3-inch mono speaker) or the Sangean PR-D5 (2.5-inch dual stereo speakers).

CCRadio AM/FM/Shortwave Portable Radio Review

CCRadio AM/FM/Shortwave Portable RadioThis radio is superb! The quality of the instrument is obvious once the box is opened.Reception is exceptional, but the real story here is the company, C. Crane. These people back up their product quality to unheard of levels.
If C.Crane sold wives, I would feel confident in buying one from them.
I have purchased two of these radios and recommend them without equivocation.

Moving from band to band and searching for stations has been made easy with simple buttons, dials, and a large lighted LCD screen display. A single five inch speaker offers clear tones and bass. There is an RCA line out for connecting the radio to a stereo system and an additional IF out to send a digital signal to a computer for decoding. Coby CX789 Digital AM/FM/NOAA Radio with Dual Alarms, silver Review

Coby CX789 Digital AM/FM/NOAA Radio with Dual Alarms, silverThis is a good deal for it's price- digital tuning with preset buttons- AM/FM/NOAA. There is a problem using the AC power (with supplied AC power cord)- when powered with AC the LED panel fades to almost unreadable!I decided to buy a second unit to see if another would have the same problme: yes! Thus, there is a defect when operating on AC power, so I don't recommend using AC power. However, operating on batteries is ok- no fading of the LED panel. Also, operating on DC adapter also tested and works ok (DC power adapter is not provided- I got one at Radio Shack: AC-TO-DC POWER ADAPTER 1.5-15VDC, 300ma and set it for 4.5 DCV)

Everything else works ok- and this is the style of radio I wanted, and there are no others like this at this price. I now have three units. This has digital tuning with quick change preset buttons and a volume knob on the right side, which is very nice! The LED panel has black letters on a non-lighted background and is hard to read- ignore the bright LED panel you see in the pic-it does not look like that! However there is a light button that lights up for 6 seconds and helps you read it better. Reception is fine for local stations, which provide good clear speaker sound, with no noise.

It's fine if you are looking for a very inexpensive digital radio, (I found nothing cheaper in this style) but you may have the AC power problem I have, and you will have to get the Radio Shack DC power adapter (4.5v, 300ma), or just use 3 D-size batteries.

UPDATE 4/7/09:Robert Lambert discovered the solution to using the AC power cord. There is an AC switch inside the battery compartment that is set on 220v when I received all three of my radios. Simply set the switch on 110v (for USA) and presto!AC power cord works fine!No need to purchase DC adapter! This power switch is not described in the instructions and I even called Coby support about my problem and they didn't mention the switch!Thankyou Robert for the info!I can't change rating, if I could I now rate this radio 4.5 stars!

Sony ICF-CD73W AM/FM/Weather Shower CD Clock Radio - White Review

Sony ICF-CD73W AM/FM/Weather Shower CD Clock Radio - WhiteI bought this radio mainly so my 2 year old and I can listen to fun kid music while we take a bath. Sounds great and can be turned down quite low...nice in an echoey bathroom. I only wish it weren't quite so bulky and that you could change CDs without accessing the back of the unit. If it's hanging up on the shower arm against the tile wall you basically have to take it down to change discs. Minor indeed buy annoying nonetheless. Given the choices out there I'd definitely buy this again.

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, Blue Review

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, BlueThe new Tivoli Songbook is one sweet, versatile radio.I was reluctant to order it because it was brand new model and I couldn't find any reviews, but I'm glad I overcame my reluctance and purchased this radio.I consider it expensive for an AM/FM radio so I expect serious performance for the money--I was not disappointed. It's Tivoli, so I expected sound quality and Tivoli delivers. The sound isn't quite as full as the Model One, but it's more than adequate. For talk radio, it's simply the best sound I've heard from any radio.

One reason I hesitated purchasing was because I planned to use this as a table radio more than a travel radio--the lack of external antenna jacks was a concern because I have trouble with AM reception in my area. The real surprise was the reception--this small radio locked on and pulled in signals that I have trouble pulling in with some of my better radios like the GE Superadio or Grundig Satellit 800--all while delivering a clear, clean signal.Admittedly, I'm not a DXer, and I'm not suggesting this is the radio for that purpose, but it's performance, particularily on AM, is impressive for such a small package.

Performance was great using the aux input on a Sirius tuner as well as MP3 and CD.

Overall, it has the look and feel--as well as performance--of a quality product.

One thing that you should be aware of--this model uses an outboard transformer--a relatively large wall wart. That negates some of the travel versatility, IMO, but isn't a problem for home use. One of the smart design features is the wall hang slot on the back--I promptly mounted the thing over my nightstand and cleared off the space formerly eaten up by my cheap, tinny sounding clock radio.

It's a rare day that a product meets my expectations, much less exceeds them, but this is a great radio!
