Sony ICF-CD543RM Kitchen CD Clock Radio (Silver) Review

I tried other radios in the kitchen, but none could compare to the sound of this unit. FM reception's pretty good too. The "kitchen friendly" controls are easy to clean. Mounting is done by drilling three holes, for which it has a paper template, and it has adjustable spacers to accommodate cabinets with recessed bottoms. It's about 11-1/2 inches deep and just an inch or two wider.

I don't seem to get any weather band channels, and the TV channels I get are very quiet so I have to remember to turn the sound down before switching to FM or CD. The timer's a nice feature for the kitchen but seconds can't be set and it takes a lot of turning to get to longer bake times, like an hour or more. The magnetic remote's also nice but you have to be able to see the sensor and stay within about 45 degrees for it to work.

Overall I'm very happy with it. The sound is great and makes spending all day around the kitchen less lonely, plus it doesn't take up any counter space. I do feel like I paid a small premium for the name Sony though.

Crosley Corsair Clock Radio with CD Player Review

I loved the picture of this item...I had just the place to put it in my home where it would look great. It does look great. It just hardly works. The whole thing only weighs a pound or two...this should have clued me in right away when unpacking it.The switches have an imprecise and awful feel and seemvery delicate. The sound quality is very poor (Remember those less than $5 transistor radios?) and the reception is worse.Even the strongest stations in my area only come in with a great deal of fuzzy sound and you can always hear the radio stations near them in the back ground.I haven't bought anything electronic that was this bad in years.Don't be fooled by the good looks...in this case beauty really is only skin deep.

Gpx CC319B CD Clock Radio with Dual Alarm Review

I received this radio five days ago.I needed a decent clock radio that played cds, had a repeat button, and was unobtrusive enough to be on the nightstand. When the radio showed up there were no instructions in the box, which I figured was okay since it's just a clock radio. After I got it plugged in and the time set, I tried to play a cd.The power button wouldn't turn it on.With no instructions I felt stupid not being able to figure it out.I left it plugged in over night and the alarm worked fine on the morning. The next night I tried the power button again and was able to play a cd all night to help me sleep. The cd player makes a whirring noise that was distracting.Since my sleep cds are mostly white noise the extra noise was annoying.I think if it was music it might not have been so noticeable. The next night I was all set to play a cd at bedtime and, again, no power. That was Thursday night and it's now Sunday and, with the exception of the clock and alarm, there hasn't been power since the second night.I don't hear any short so I think it's just a bad machine, maybe too cheap.I'm returning it tomorrow.

GPX D715 AM/FM/CD Digital Clock Radio with Dual Alarm Review

This item worked real well and then all of a sudden the buttons would not work. I could not change the time, set the alarm, or even turn on the CD player or radio. The alarm still worked, but I had to set it to get up at the time previously set because it would not change. It was not just one button it was all of them. Nothing worked. It was like they had a timer and shut down all of a sudden. It happened only a week after the 90 day warrranty period was over.

Emerson AM/FM Clock Radio with CD Player and Remote Control - CKD2330 Review

This is such a bad product.I seriously want my money back, but it's not even worth the hassle.Luckily, I decided to use it as my CD player in my bedroom, and not as an alarm clock.I keep this thing all the way across the bedroom from my bed, and I STILL have to drape heavy clothing over it every night in order to be able to sleep, and I am NOT a sensitive sleeper. The display is so freakishly bright, it actually illuminates my entire (rather large) bedroom with it's horrible blue glow. There's some garbage about an "automatic dimmer" in the description of this product, but that is pure bull. It's supposed to dim when the lights go out, but if anything, it actually gets brighter.I cannot imagine how anyone can sleep with this next to their beds.Furthermore, what's the point of the horrifically bright time display if you can't ever read the time unless you're facing it directly face-on, and about an inch from the display?Whoever designed this is an idiot, as the bright blue background almost completely obscures the black numbers that show the time. The colors are too close in tone or brightness for there to be enough contrast to read what the display says.

Another problem, and this one is even "funnier" than the aforementioned: as we speak, my month-old Emerson clock-radio is speeding through the time, literally. It has some weird tick, where, if you use the remote control to control the volume, it affects the minutes part of the time as well as the volume. If you hold down the up or down volume buttons for any amount of time, the minutes start freaking out uncontrollably. For instance, as I write, my clock is going through 11 am over and over and over again at warp speed. It would be funny if I didn't pay for this piece of garbage.

All of that being said, the CD player in my experience is serviceable.Mine plays burned CDs as well as normal ones. The sound quality is decent for such a small player.

If you are thinking of getting this as a clock or alarm, please think carefully: the screwed up volume-time function, the horribly bright display, and the almost complete lack of contrast between the time digits and background make this virtually unuseable as an alarm clock.

Hot Wheels Scrrechin™ Projection Alarm Clock Radio - HW805 Review

Santa brought this for my son for Christmas. He's 8 and wanted to get himself up for school. We tried a cheap clock, but he lost interest in it because let's face it, at this age...they still look at things as a toy.We decided to get this clock because it looked fun and it is!He obsesses over the thing. It has a volume control, but he likes his LOUD.It talks to them and tells them "Let's get going, time to start the day" and then honks the horn and screeches the tires. If that's too obnoxious for some, no worries...it also has the radio feature as well as the standard alarm sound. You won't be disappointed!

GPX CRCD-2806 Clock Radio and CD Player with AM/FM Radio and Alarm Review

I purchased this CD clock radio because I found it difficult to sort through all the mixed reviews on everything else.

On the whole, I am very happy with it.It is easy to use, has a dimmer so I can sleep and am not bothered by the display, and the CD seats securely so that it does not bounce around as they can sometimes do in these small, inexpensive devices. It woke me right on schedule and was easy to wake up to.

The only drawback, and I guess you can't get everything in a device in this price range, is that the sound quality, particularly at the low levels I often use in my bedroom, is quite airy sounding.

If you want good sound -- or you "want it all" -- this is not the device for you.If you want a workable and inexpensive CD clock radio, this is a good choice in my opinion.

Sony ICF-CDK70 Under Cabinet Kitchen Clock Radio with CD-Changer Review

I have to come clean.I wrote a scathing review of this unit earlier today.Last night, I set this up in our kitchen, but after fumbling for a couple hours to get decent reception from the ac cord/antenna, I gave up.Static and poor audio from every station on the fm dial -- and we live well within the bounds of Washington DC's radio coverage (and get great reception from all of our other radios and stereos).Well, joy of the internet!I read that refrigerators can interfere with other electronics that share the same outlet and can even interfere with electronics that are simply in the vicinity. As it turns out, I had indeed plugged the radio into the same outlet as the fridge and while I had tried everything to improve receptio last night -- even adding and extension cord to increase the "length" of the ac antenna -- it never occurred to me to try a different outlet.Sure enough, that did it.Problem solved. It turns out circuits with light dimmers can have a similar effect as fridges, too. Bottom line, make sure to select your outlet carefully.Sounds great now -- what difference. Can't seem to change the rating on this, but would give it 4 stars now, at least.

Sony ICF-CD73W AM/FM/Weather Shower CD Clock Radio - White Review

I bought this radio mainly so my 2 year old and I can listen to fun kid music while we take a bath. Sounds great and can be turned down quite low...nice in an echoey bathroom. I only wish it weren't quite so bulky and that you could change CDs without accessing the back of the unit. If it's hanging up on the shower arm against the tile wall you basically have to take it down to change discs. Minor indeed buy annoying nonetheless. Given the choices out there I'd definitely buy this again.

Clock Radio with Front Load CD Review

We bought this for a bathroom radio and works well for that.We wanted digital tuning with presets so we could switch between several stations easily. After we got it, we tried it as out alarm clock but it only lasted one night.

The first problem is the blue backlit LCD display. It only has two brightness setting and they are both way to bright for a bedroom. It could work as a bright night light, but I recommend you don't face it towards the bed.;-)

We blocked the light for the night because what we really liked was the digital volume control. We thought it would let us set the radio volume each night without guessing how loud it would be in the morning. So the next morning we were rudely blasted awake.Reading the manual I found out the volume is factory set to fairly loud then gets louder if you don't turn it off.So if that is the right volume for you, you're in luck.If you think it's too loud (like we did), then you're out of luck.

So we have a nice bathroom radio/CD player. But for us the alarm is no good.

Timex TM80 Dual Alarm Clock Radio for FlashDrive & SD Card or any iPod, MP3, CD or Cassette Audio Player Using the Line-In Audio Jack with Full-function Remote Control Review

After using this for a month, I'm still very pleased with it. The pros far outweigh the cons here.

First and best, this thing sounds GOOD. There are 5 tone presets to choose from. The ported speaker is able to produce amazing sound quality. 5 stars for this alone.

Clock displays time, and when no music is playing, the date. Automatic DST switch. Backlight has 4 levels one of which is off. Backlight color and display text is low contrast, hard for me to see.

Battery backup keeps all your settings.

It remembers quite a bit: If you hit the power button, whatever you were listening to is restored, be it MP3 or radio. If you hit the sleep button, it applies the volume setting in use the last time it turned itself off. If you hit the play button, it plays, from the beginning, whatever MP3 was playing when last turned off.

Sleep times of 120, 90, 60, 30 and 15 mins. After setting the sleep mode, if you click the sleep button again, it displays the time remaining before cutoff. When its time, the sound is gently faded out.

Random and repeat settings for MP3 play. Folder button so you can browse memory contents. ID tag info scrolls while track is played. Select SD slot or USB port for source. Line in for other stereo input. Recessed well for USB drives, with a cover. SD card sticks up a few millimeters from it's slot.

Full featured remote. Yes, it is handy if the clock is just out of reach on the nightstand.

Wake to: radio, mp3, buzzer. There is no way to select "wake to random mp3", but I get around that by putting a 3 second silent mp3 in the memory, select that as the wakeup track, and set for random play.

12 station memories for the radio, arranged in 3 banks, 2 for FM stations and 1 for AM.

The cons:

FM reception is so so. The stations I can get all sound good, but can't pull in distant ones.

The buttons on the front [sleep, power, alarms, wake to, radio preset bank selecter] are impossible to distinguish by touch. Adding a dot of hot glue to a few of them helped quite a bit.

The volume control feels like nothing is there. It works fine, just feels weird.

Can't read the time unless I put on my glasses.

___________

If I didn't already own one, I'd buy it again!

Sony ICF-CD7000BLK AM/FM Stereo CD Clock Radio Review

My now-ancient Philips CD clock radio let me down, so I decided it was time to upgrade with more-modern technology. I still wanted to wake to CD sound rather than a radio station or normal alarm sounds, and after a short search, I found this Sony. It has some features that I really appreciate, which make this clock intuitive and useful. Specifically ...

1) There is a perpetual clock built in, so that after a power failure the clock has the correct time. My old clock had a 9V battery to keep the clock circuit energized, but it always ran fast (really fast) and needed to be reset after the power returned. This one works really well.

2) The CD track selection works every time. My older clock seemed to have a "mind of its own" when I set the wake-up track. I resigned to just letting it go on track 1, which would reliably repeat; just pick a CD with an acceptable first track. This Sony clock wakes me on whatever track I set it to every time.

3) The second alarm is a nice feature. I can easily set it to one of two different wake-up times with the press of a button (really it is two buttons). The out-going Philips clock had a more-arcane method of setting a second wake-up time. I don't think that I ever mastered it.

4) The sound quality is more than adequate. What I would expect out of the tiny 2-in speakers seems to be surpassed. Perhaps it is my imagination.

5) The generously sized snooze bar is easy to find in the morning. Although my Philips clock had a proximity sensor to detect my approaching hand, it seemed to have a very narrow field of regard, and I often had to wave my hand numerous times to get the alarm to stop. This Sony clock has the snooze bar located just above the table surface, so a groggy sliding hand can find it easily.

6) The addition of two alarm times on the main display help in seeing that the alarm is set and to what time. No button pushes are required to read the alarm time.

7) Oh yeah ... it is a pretty cool-looking clock with an easily loaded CD.Now for the not-so-good part...

This clock uses blue LCD backlighting, which is very bright in a dark room, even at its lowest setting. It is so bright that I had to cover over the display to prevent it from lighting up my room. I found that cutting out a 2.5 x 5 piece of card stock makes a suitable display cover that prevents the night-time light pollution, but you also lose the time on the display. It works out OK in my bedroom, because we have a second perpetual-time clock with a less-obtrusive red LED display.

Overall, I would still give this clock a high mark, and I am happy using it. I would expect that someone with more light seeping in at night might not have the same objection to the display brightness that I have. Selectable display colors, where red is a choice, might be a solution for me.

The old clock radio finally died and my husband and I thought it would be nice to have a CD player in the bedroom to listen to audio books in bed now and then (yes, I know, but it depends on the book!!).We've found the sound quality on such an inexpensive item to be extremely good, it's easy to tune the radio in and we like the huge time display - I can even see it without my glasses at night!!So far, it's awakened us at our ridiculously early get up time during the week without fail.No complaints - very happy with this clock/radio/CD player.
