Honeywell TE242ELW Personal Weather Station with Atomic Clock and Dual Alarm Review

The weather around here has gotten colder, and out of curiosity I've always wanted to know how cold it was outside at any given moment.It helps especially when I'm getting dressed so I know how much I have to bundle (in the winter).

I got the TE242 as a gift.After looking at the picture on the packaging, the device is deceptively larger than I would imagine.With nothing to compare it to, I imagined it to be very compact and small.It'slarger, about the height and thickness of a paperback book.The styling is nice, and the readout is decently-sized and very legible.

The device shows the outside temperature, the inside temperature, the time, and the date.It comes with a smaller remote temperature probe about the size of an altoids tin that you put outside.I hung mine up by the outside door.It receives this signal wirelessly, and also syncs the time up with the US atomic clock for accurate time.I had to set the timezone on mine (press mode until the date abbreviation is next to the time, hold up till the timezone changes).

The only problem I've had is that the unit sometimes loses the signal from the remote temp sensor, which means the outside temperature is blank.Holding up for a few seconds makes the unit search and find the signal again.A minor inconvenience, but annoying.However, it may have been due to interference since I haven't had any signal loss since moving.The remote temp sensor may have a channel selector that would help, I haven't looked at it in a while.

The main Honeywell site is hard to navigate, but finally I found the site for these devices: [...]I was able to find the manual there.

I do wish it had a humidity feature and that it didn't lose signal, but overall I'm pleased with the device.I might shop around next time, but I like this one.

Excalibur 8500 Digital Weather Station Review

Regardless where did you place it on, it's not easy to read.The LCD screen is highly reflective.The base makes it impossible to be mounted or glued to an upright surface.The only valuable reading, the temperature and the humidity numbers are crunched to the bottom which makes it even harder to read.

Chaney Instrument Wireless Weather Station Review

I recieved this weather station for my birthday, and overall impressed with the looks, accuracy, and size of display. I have 5 other weather stations to compare readings, and this weather station is dead accurite. Even fallows the local weather station readings to the nearest millibar. It is hard to figure out the P.M.C.E time zones since the switch is integrated in the - button, but once you figure it out its easy. The transmitter workes better that described. Seems to have a stronger range than specified. I have the sensor located at the opposite side of the house through 6 walls, and signals are still good. I am very pleased.
Highly recommended.

I was initially delighted with this product when I bought it six months ago.It looks very nice and functions well.The display is easy to read.The alarms work (though as another reviewer noted you don't get two alarms per day).The gentle back illumination works nicely to let you read the display at night.I haven't paid much attention to the weather display except for the temperature and humidity functions, so I won't comment on those.But I have a few comments worth recording.

First, the unit has two parts.The remote temperature/humidity sensor unit that you hang outdoors isn't shown in the product picture on Amazon.It's about half the size of a pack of cigarettes and it has its own small temperature/humidity display.This unit requires two AAA batteries.If the temperature outside will ever drop below freezing, even for just an hour or two, these must be expensive lithium batteries (8 Energizer Lithium AAA 1.5V High Energy Lithium e2 Battery. 2 X Card 4AAA for example).That's because normal alkaline and titanium batteries deliver less voltage at low temperature, whereas lithium batteries give much more uniform voltage output down to about -40 degrees.If the voltage supply to the outdoor sensor drops too much, it will lose synchronization with the indoor unit and you'll have to "connect" them again.

That brings me to why I think this device is too complicated.When the device is new, or whenever the outdoor unit loses its radio connection to the indoor unit, the two units must negotiate which radio channel they will use to communicate.That's a useful process, because it allows them to choose a radio frequency that has minimal interference from other nearby devices.However, the process for doing it is maddening complex.You must remove the batteries from both units, then insert the batteries in the remote unit, then use an unbent paper clip to press the reset switch on the outdoor unit, then bring the units close together and insert the batteries in the indoor unit.After a minute or so they negotiate a frequency and the temperature of the outdoor unit is displayed on the indoor unit.You can then move them apart.

But you're not done.Having removed the batteries from the indoor unit, you must reset the date, choose a time zone and a bunch of other settings, using a combination of button pushes that is too complex to remember: I printed it out in very small type and taped it to the back of the device so I would not have to find the instruction book each time.

Finally, the atomic clock, like all such devices, synchronizes to the broadcast signal from NIST during the early morning hours, typically midnight to 5 AM local time.That time is chosen because the radio signal is much easier to receive at night.To get my unit to synchronize I had to put it on a window sill; it could not receive a strong enough signal from my night stand.That requirement is typical for so-called "atomic" clocks and watches.Fortunately it only needs to synchronize once a month or so to keep good time.

All in all, I'm glad I bought this remote thermometer, and I'm willing to live with the restrictions noted above.But you should be aware before you buy that this is not a "set it and forget it" device.

Timex TX6490 Wireless Thermometer with Alarm Clock Review

I bought this to use as an alarm clock with the added feature of a thermometer but there is NO alarm clock. Additionally, when I put the batteries in both units, they sat side by side and gave me two different temperature readings. It wasn't off by much but it should still have given me the same reading.
10/21/09 Update: The outdoor thermometer stopped working about 1 week ago. The outdoor temp is stuck at 50.0 F and new batteries and bringing it indoor did nothing. I feel so ripped off. I wish I can give this product zero stars.

Philips AJ260 Weather Station Clock Radio Review

After reading all the other reviews I wasn't too sure. But reading between the lines I decided to take a chance. I bit the bullet and bought it and so far I am happy I did. I did find one thing I would like changed, one thing I would like enhanced.

The negative and needing changed is that the dual alarms will both sound by the same method. Either both by buzzer or both by radio. I personally like to use one alarm by radio, one by buzzer. That gives me a gentle wake up and then a reminder alert a little later.

To make the clock better, it would be nice if you could dim the weather LED. It is bright, no doubt about it. You can set it so that it only comes on for 10 seconds when you press a button, but I'd still like to see it dimmable.

As far as the other complaints... almost all the bad reviews could be corrected and attributed to user error. If people would RTFM before moaning, life would be easier.

Time resets to central but you live in the west, well read the manual. Not getting the auto time update, RTFM. Weather indicator light stays lit and keeps you up at night, read the manual. Outside temperature sensor giving inaccurate readings, read the flipping manual and mount the sensor in an appropriate place. As far as the sensor only measuring barometric pressure indoors and not outside, well unless you live in a submarine or a minute-man missile silo and use the airlock, the pressure inside and outside your house are the same. Humidity might be different, but pressure is the same, and that is what gives the clock its rudimentary weather predictions. Yes, it is really basic weather predictions, but what do you expect. It's a clock radio, not a meteorologist. Turn on the radio if you want more details.

I'd buy one again, but I would prefer separate buzz/radio selections for each alarm.
