Sony ICF-CD853V AM/FM/TV/Weather Clock Radio/CD Player Review

Sony ICF-CD853V AM/FM/TV/Weather Clock Radio/CD PlayerI've owned the "Liv" version of this alarm clock, same model just different color, for about 6 months now. I initially liked the digital tuner, CD-RW play ability, 3 alarms, and 3 Tuner function. Also I liked the compactness of it and it's small "footprint".
I'm afraid I must rate it unacceptable however, I'll explain why. First I have a problem with seeing the time on the LCD, being backlit makes it hard to read the numbers- even being placed directly across from my bed, it's also difficult to see at certain angles too (it completely disappears) I believe if just the numbers themselves (not the whole screen) were litthen this would be a solution. Secondly, I think the "buzzer" is way too polite or cute and could easily see someone sleeping thru it. It's not volume adjustable either. Lastly, and probably most important, this thing has only a 1 min internal back-up if the power fails. That is a critical design flaw in my opinion. In other words, if the power happens to go out for anytime longer than just 1 minute while you're sleeping count on oversleeping, being late, and seeing a flashing "12:00" to greet you when you wake. Like I said, this is simply unacceptable. I really don't understand why sony didn't just incorporate a 9V back-up like other alarm clocks use. In closing, I wish I never bought it, but oh well, I've learned my lesson. Please steer clear of sony alarm clocks until they improve these sort of design flaws.

Memorex Loft CD Clock Radio - Midnight Black (MC7104-BLK) Review

Memorex Loft CD Clock Radio - Midnight Black (MC7104-BLK)While the Memorex Loft had some features I desired such as battery backup, duel alarms, and expandable speaker, its drawbacks make it basically unusable as far as I can see.The back light on the display is way too bright even on the dim setting and the number display is very difficult to see even in the best of lighting conditions.Waking up at night and trying to see the display simply blinds you.The control buttons on the front of the unit are too small, and impossible to push without holding the whole unit to keep it from moving.I ended up taking it to work to use for music while I work.It is pretty much useless as a clock radio in the bedroom.

Gpx CC319B CD Clock Radio with Dual Alarm Review

Gpx CC319B CD Clock Radio with Dual AlarmI received this radio five days ago.I needed a decent clock radio that played cds, had a repeat button, and was unobtrusive enough to be on the nightstand. When the radio showed up there were no instructions in the box, which I figured was okay since it's just a clock radio. After I got it plugged in and the time set, I tried to play a cd.The power button wouldn't turn it on.With no instructions I felt stupid not being able to figure it out.I left it plugged in over night and the alarm worked fine on the morning. The next night I tried the power button again and was able to play a cd all night to help me sleep. The cd player makes a whirring noise that was distracting.Since my sleep cds are mostly white noise the extra noise was annoying.I think if it was music it might not have been so noticeable. The next night I was all set to play a cd at bedtime and, again, no power. That was Thursday night and it's now Sunday and, with the exception of the clock and alarm, there hasn't been power since the second night.I don't hear any short so I think it's just a bad machine, maybe too cheap.I'm returning it tomorrow.

GPX D715 AM/FM/CD Digital Clock Radio with Dual Alarm Review

GPX D715 AM/FM/CD Digital Clock Radio with Dual AlarmThis item worked real well and then all of a sudden the buttons would not work. I could not change the time, set the alarm, or even turn on the CD player or radio. The alarm still worked, but I had to set it to get up at the time previously set because it would not change. It was not just one button it was all of them. Nothing worked. It was like they had a timer and shut down all of a sudden. It happened only a week after the 90 day warrranty period was over.

Sony ICF-CD855VSIL TV/Weather/FM/AM 4 Band CD Clock Radio Review

Sony ICF-CD855VSIL TV/Weather/FM/AM 4 Band CD Clock RadioBought this for its sleek design, small footprint and CD capability. It was purchased for our babies room so that we could play CDs.We wanted something smaller and better looking than any of the boom boxes and not as expensive as the shelf systems at which we looked.

So your needs may differ if you plan to use this as an alarm clock.

We really like the size and sound quality for something this small. It is very easy to set up without even using the owners manual. The buttons are well placed and have a very solid feel. The unit has a very high quality feel to it as you would expect from Sony and considering the price.

All functions work as described so I won't spend a lot of time on them individually.Reception is excellent in FM mode, AM is a bit weaker. The TV and weather bands are very hit and miss as far as reception and was dissapointed that I could not get better reception from the preselectd weather frequencies as I live in a well populated area that is subject to severe weather.

CD works flawlessly but the size hinders the bass and mid-range a bit.But again, consideing the size of the unit I am more than happy with the sound quality. If sound quality is more important than size you may want to consider the Panasonic RC-CD350.

I have only four complaints about this unit... the wall wart power supply is huge, the LCD backlight is VERY bright, even on its lowest setting of three. This isn't too much of an issue for us as we will use it as a night light in our babies room.More frustrating is the fact that considering how bright the LCD backlight is it is difficult to read the LCD diplay.I couldn't use this if it were for my bedroom alarm clock. And the last is the lack of a battery back up. This is sort of silly in a unit that costs $80.

Bottom line is this is a high quality unit which has a few drawbacks that a unit of this price point shouldn't have.

Pros:
Sleek design (Only Panasonic was close on design)
Relativly small size (considering it plays CDs)
Good sound quality (Panasonic was better but bigger)
Solid feel (What you expect from Sony at this price)

Cons:
Huge wall wart transformer
VERY bright LCD backlight
Poor weather band reception
Difficult to read LCD
No battery back up

GPX CRCD-2806 Clock Radio and CD Player with AM/FM Radio and Alarm Review

GPX CRCD-2806 Clock Radio and CD Player with AM/FM Radio and AlarmI purchased this CD clock radio because I found it difficult to sort through all the mixed reviews on everything else.

On the whole, I am very happy with it.It is easy to use, has a dimmer so I can sleep and am not bothered by the display, and the CD seats securely so that it does not bounce around as they can sometimes do in these small, inexpensive devices. It woke me right on schedule and was easy to wake up to.

The only drawback, and I guess you can't get everything in a device in this price range, is that the sound quality, particularly at the low levels I often use in my bedroom, is quite airy sounding.

If you want good sound -- or you "want it all" -- this is not the device for you.If you want a workable and inexpensive CD clock radio, this is a good choice in my opinion.

Timex T435B MP3/CD Line-In 8-Color Clock Radio Review

Timex T435B MP3/CD Line-In 8-Color Clock RadioThis is a nice clock for the office, but I don't depend on it to wake me up. I chose this clock because of the dual alarms and iPod connection. The buzzer alarm is not very loud and turns off automatically when the radio alarm goes off.The radio is not good - very bad reception that fades in and out without moving the dial or antenna wire.I'm going to find a better alarm clock and take this to the office as a desk clock & iPod speaker. The good features: dimmer for the display, 2,5, 7 day alarms, automatically updates with Daylight Savings change and you can adjust the volume for the sleep setting without changing the alarm volume.

Clock Radio with Front Load CD Review

Clock Radio with Front Load CDWe bought this for a bathroom radio and works well for that.We wanted digital tuning with presets so we could switch between several stations easily. After we got it, we tried it as out alarm clock but it only lasted one night.

The first problem is the blue backlit LCD display. It only has two brightness setting and they are both way to bright for a bedroom. It could work as a bright night light, but I recommend you don't face it towards the bed.;-)

We blocked the light for the night because what we really liked was the digital volume control. We thought it would let us set the radio volume each night without guessing how loud it would be in the morning. So the next morning we were rudely blasted awake.Reading the manual I found out the volume is factory set to fairly loud then gets louder if you don't turn it off.So if that is the right volume for you, you're in luck.If you think it's too loud (like we did), then you're out of luck.

So we have a nice bathroom radio/CD player. But for us the alarm is no good.

Jensen AM/FM Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Top Loading CD Player - JCR-332About 8 months after I purchased this item the clock display started to blink erratically and the alarm now fails to function at all.The sound is great; both CD player & radio work. The warranty is only 90 days.I really love the size and all the functions, so I'll take my chance and purchase another, hoping it will last in full function.Jensen has such a good reputation!I'm surprised at this failure.

Sony ICF-CD7000BLK AM/FM Stereo CD Clock Radio Review

Sony ICF-CD7000BLK AM/FM Stereo CD Clock RadioMy now-ancient Philips CD clock radio let me down, so I decided it was time to upgrade with more-modern technology. I still wanted to wake to CD sound rather than a radio station or normal alarm sounds, and after a short search, I found this Sony. It has some features that I really appreciate, which make this clock intuitive and useful. Specifically ...

1) There is a perpetual clock built in, so that after a power failure the clock has the correct time. My old clock had a 9V battery to keep the clock circuit energized, but it always ran fast (really fast) and needed to be reset after the power returned. This one works really well.

2) The CD track selection works every time. My older clock seemed to have a "mind of its own" when I set the wake-up track. I resigned to just letting it go on track 1, which would reliably repeat; just pick a CD with an acceptable first track. This Sony clock wakes me on whatever track I set it to every time.

3) The second alarm is a nice feature. I can easily set it to one of two different wake-up times with the press of a button (really it is two buttons). The out-going Philips clock had a more-arcane method of setting a second wake-up time. I don't think that I ever mastered it.

4) The sound quality is more than adequate. What I would expect out of the tiny 2-in speakers seems to be surpassed. Perhaps it is my imagination.

5) The generously sized snooze bar is easy to find in the morning. Although my Philips clock had a proximity sensor to detect my approaching hand, it seemed to have a very narrow field of regard, and I often had to wave my hand numerous times to get the alarm to stop. This Sony clock has the snooze bar located just above the table surface, so a groggy sliding hand can find it easily.

6) The addition of two alarm times on the main display help in seeing that the alarm is set and to what time. No button pushes are required to read the alarm time.

7) Oh yeah ... it is a pretty cool-looking clock with an easily loaded CD.Now for the not-so-good part...

This clock uses blue LCD backlighting, which is very bright in a dark room, even at its lowest setting. It is so bright that I had to cover over the display to prevent it from lighting up my room. I found that cutting out a 2.5 x 5 piece of card stock makes a suitable display cover that prevents the night-time light pollution, but you also lose the time on the display. It works out OK in my bedroom, because we have a second perpetual-time clock with a less-obtrusive red LED display.

Overall, I would still give this clock a high mark, and I am happy using it. I would expect that someone with more light seeping in at night might not have the same objection to the display brightness that I have. Selectable display colors, where red is a choice, might be a solution for me.
